National Cancer Institute (NCI)
The National Cancer Institute's website is a comprehensive resource for information on every aspect of cancer. It is regularly updated and has sections for both patients and healthcare professionals. The NCI has set the ambitious goal “to eliminate the suffering and death due to cancer…by 2015.”

Although intended primarily for the healthcare professional, ASCO has patient guides for the most common cancers and their treatment, and links to patient support organizations.

Physician Data Query (PDQ)
The National Cancer Institute's computerized cancer information database. Includes original research papers, peer-reviewed summaries on cancer prevention, detection, genetics, state-of-the-art treatment, supportive care, screening, investigational drugs, alternative and complementary cancer medicine, and a registry of clinical trials. Content on the site is reviewed by specialists and updated monthly.

As a service of the National Cancer Institute, this website provides information on locating and understanding cancer trials. Information on specific types of cancer, cancer research, and news items are included.

ClinicalTrials.gov
This resource, provided by the National Institutes of Health through the National Library of Medicine, is used to locate government and privately funded clinical trials for various diseases including cancer. The ClinicalTrials.gov database contains clinical studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, other Federal agencies, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Approved Oncology Drugs – FDA
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) provides oncology drug information. It explains the various stages of the drug approval process, and access to unapproved products - usually through clinical trials or special exception.

MedlinePlus – Drug Information
MedlinePlus features a guide to over 10,000 prescription (brand-name and generic) and over-the-counter medications that includes dosing, drug interactions, side effects, and storage.

Statistics

American Cancer Society Statistics
Annual statistics from 1997-2004 that includes facts and figures, prevention statistics and early detection statistics. Statistics are also available specifically for African-Americans, Hispanic/Latinos (available in Spanish), and breast cancer. This data is also searchable by state.

Cancer mapping in New York State
The New York State Department of Health's Cancer Surveillance Improvement Initiative provides statistics on cancer incidence throughout the state. Data is searchable by county or zip code. Directions on map reading and online brochures for specific cancers are also provided. Statistics are limited to the following cancers: breast, lung, colorectal, and prostate. A listing of areas with elevated cancer incidence is included. Most maps cover 1993-1997 (last revised in 2001).

Cancer Mondial
This web site presents data collected by various cancer registries on the occurrence, prevalence, survival, and mortality of cancer worldwide, held by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Although intended for the researcher, it may be of interest to the patient.
